Puzzle found this on the internet and wanted to follow it. I thought it seemed like a fun project so I asked to help. The following webpage chronicles our journey.
We cut out what would become the walls of the body. They didn't quite fit together. That's probably fine. We glued it up and clamped it all together. Once that was somewhat dried - it only took about 30 minutes - we cut out and glued in a brace. Once the brace glue had set a bit, we clamped and glued on the top of the body, out of which we had drilled a bunch of holes for reasons we weren't completely sure of.
After a bit (a lot) of talking and thinking about how string instruments work, we decided to carve out a small valley for the strings so that they'd have the proper angle heading up to the nut from the tuning pegs. Puzzle took a dremel to the cherry neck-to-be. It produced a lot of dark black smoke, which I'm sure was really great for us to inhale. After carving out the valley, we pounded a nail through it to run the strings under. The sharp end of the nail stuck out of the neck, so we hot-glued a soft toy over it for safety and charm.
